NEW BOOKS The following book summaries are taken from the UNM Press website - Santa Fe Nativa: A Collection of Nuevomexicano Writing Rosalie C. Otero, A. Gabriel Melendez, Enrique R. Lamadrid University of New Mexico Press, November, 2009 The belief that land is sacred, embodying the memory and inheritance of those who sacrificed to settle it, is common among New Mexican Hispanos, or Nuevomexicanos, and Santa Fe serves as their unique geographic and symbolic center. The Caesars - Paper Tigers (CD)
The Caesars are known unfortunately because of their song “Jerk It Out”, which is annoying to say the least. What is more indicative of their music is a track like the one they opened up “Paper Tigers” with; namely, “It’s Not The Fall That Hurts”. The straight-forward rock sound of that track, with a twinge of eighties dusky electronics, really makes a play for an entirely new genre of music. Similarly, the more-forward rock track “It’s Not The Fall That Hurts” cannot be farther from the “Jerk I
Music Review: Faryl Smith, “Faryl”
The teen finalist from last year’s Britain’s Got Talent serves up a calm and peaceful collection of familiar tunes in a mezzo-soprano classical style. This listener anticipates new material and a maturing voice as the two ingredients to propel Faryl Smith to true excellence.

Music Review: Mayfly EP by Jason Karaban
Hi all! Though I’d not heard of Jason Karaban before, the three songs on Mayfly resonated with me. Inspired by images of the Civil War , these are haunting, sad songs tinged with regret and loss stripped down to a bare few instruments and melodies. Karaban was accompanied by Chris Joyner on piano (”No Casualties”) and Lucy Schwartz on backing vocals (” Sullivan Ballou ” and “No Casualties”), but “A Far Better Place” is Karaban going solo. But Karaban seems to surround himself with di

Rapper Pitbull Punches Guy on Stage without Missing a Beat (Video)

This is an amazing video clip. Apparently, on April 30 out in Colorado, some ass-hat decided that it would be a good idea to get up on stage with rapper Pitbull and “make it rain” by throwing money in his face. Pitbull doesn’t take too kindly to this, apparently, and absolutely slams this guy in the face. Bast part: he never misses a beat while doing so. The fan was thrown out by security but let back in once he convinced everyone that he meant no harm. The police were not called.

Paying Guests

The moment you hear about a film that has a title which goes as Paying Guests and stars a bunch of youngsters creating some ‘dhamaal’, you know that it is going to be a full on fun ride all the way. For a movie like this, a score isn’t really required to stand out per se. It has to primarily complement the narrative of the film and be a spicy ingredient to the scheme of things. With Sajid-Wajid at the helm of affairs, you know that there would at least be a tune or two that would definitely make

Bruce Lee Band – Beautiful World (CD)
Ooh… its the Manfred Mann Band meeting with The Specials. Or, at least, that is how the beginning of this EP (Last Words This Morning) sounds. Borth’s saxophone really gives “Last Words This Morning” a full-bodied sound that draws the emotions of listeners just like the keys of Choi intensify the second track, “Go Feet Go”. The great thing about the Bruce Lee Band in this track is that they are able to create through their music, the drums and sax laid down on the track, feet dancing furiously o

“At another point in Lisztomania, Roger Daltrey’s entire body is sucked into a devilish princess’ underthings. (Seriously.) Before that happens, though, the cigar-chomping heiress quotes Oscar Wilde while explaining her unladylike smoking habit, “It’s the perfect form of pleasure, it’s exquisite and leaves one unsatisfied. What more can one ask?” Phoenix seem to understand this line of thinking— and not just because they look like a group of guys who know their Gauloises. They’re pleasure-pusher
Music Review: Sarah Reeves - Sweet Sweet Sound
With a growing number of aspiring artists releasing debut albums into the praise and worship market each year, it takes something special to make listeners sit up and take notice. Nineteen-year-old Sarah Reeves has that something special in spades. Her debut album Sweet Sweet Sound - an EP consisting of seven relatively short tracks – cuts to the quick with clear vocals replete with longing and musical back-up featuring consistently strong piano parts through a selection of styles.
