George Strait is Pushing Boundaries and Opening Doors with “El Rey”
Taking chances is a rare thing in mainstream country these days. Taking chances that are culturally significant is even rarer. Leave it to veteran George Strait to be the diamond in the rough. On his new album, Twang , Strait covers “El Rey” a traditional Mexican folk song delivered entirely in Spanish. The move has the country music world buzzing. About the Song: “El Rey” (which means “The King”) was written over 50 years ago by Jose Alfredo Jimenez, who is one of Mexico’s most este

This set is an absolute must have for fans of BSG and fans of scores.
Paris to Cuba
“ Every time I go to Paris, I get inspired. I start thinking about ways I can embrace the city and absorb its magic…” “This album, inspired by my appreciation of both styles, came about from the feel-good spirit that both Paris and Cuba share.” — Mario Grigorov When I saw the email in my inbox, I couldn’t believe my luck (and the power of Google searches since the email came right after my post about possibly not going to Cuba!). My initial thought was Me? Write a music review?

Cruiserweight – Sweet Weaponry (CD)

Coming through like an actually-female singer like Claudio (a fake-female singer) from Coheed and Cambria, Cruiserweight’s “Sweet Weaponry” comes through in an intense way, even if it is a little on the sterile side. “Vermont” is a track that sounds like it should be in the middle of the disc, in the sense that Cruiserweight is already at the top of their game, and with their incorporation of Sean Neil’s vocals, I did not know personally what realms they still needed to conquer after the track.
The Crumbs – Hold that Shit Right (CD)
I’ve reviewed The Crumbs once before. That album I wasn’t the biggest fan of, but that was The Crumbs 2003-2004, and this is the Crumbs 1993-2002, and I don’t feel that a blanket statement would do much to describe what clearly is a different phase for this long-lasting band. I’m shocked, I hear melody, and a style of punk that is a mixture of Rancid and The Ramones come out of the first track, “Dothan, Pill City, USA”, with the perfect pseudo-psychobilly guitar to top that off. While there is n

Gavin Borchert Classical Music Review: Beethoven’s Late String Quartets
Tuesday, July 28 at 2:00 p.m. on “KUOW Presents” The string quartet is comprised of two violins, viola and cello. For many composers the string quartet is a musical diary. It’s a setting where composers have come to reveal their most intimate thoughts and emotions. In the 1820s, Beethoven wrote some of his final pieces for string quartet. He was losing his hearing at the time and near death. The resulting quartets are moody,…
